A new year is upon us, which means new beginnings and developing better habits. If you’re a plastic surgery patient, the new year means a chance to think about the benefits of your procedure and how to make them last for as long as possible. Good at-home care means you won’t always need to visit a board-certified plastic surgeon to take care of lines, wrinkles, and unwanted pockets of body fat.

The team at our Dallas plastic surgery center would like to offer some advice on how to make your plastic surgery results last as long as possible.

Quit Smoking and the Use of Tobacco Products

Smoking is bad for your lungs, heart, gums, and even your skin. Over time, smokers experience deeper wrinkles and poor skin texture due to the damage to their collagen and elastin. Kicking the habit is easier said than done, but it is one of the best things you can do for your general health and your appearance.

Exercise Regularly

Staying active helps you feel great and burns excess calories to maintain a healthy body mass. Make sure to exercise regularly and get some physical activity in each day. This is especially important for people who’ve undergone liposuction and want to keep that excess fat off for the foreseeable future.

Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet

In addition to regular exercise, it’s a good idea to eat healthy as well. Focus on a diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits, lean protein, and whole grains. Limit your consumption of junk food and heavily processed foods. If you’ve undergone a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), you may have developed some good eating habits already.

Use Sunblock When You’re Outside

The sun does serious damage to the skin, causing uneven pigmentation, rough textures, darker scar tissue, and deepening lines and wrinkles. To protect your skin from harm, be sure to apply sunblock every time you step out into the sun.

Wear Sunglasses and a Hat with a Brim Outdoors

For added protection of the sun’s UV rays, consider wearing sunglasses and a hat with a brim. That shade can be especially helpful for protecting your face from advanced signs of aging.

Use Head and Face Protection When Applicable

Motorcycle helmets, headgear for sports, safety goggles, and other kinds of facial protection are crucial for preventing injuries. Wearing this protective headwear could save your life and also prevent the need for a cosmetic nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) to fix a broken nose.

Hydrate and Moisturize

Hydration and moisturizing are going to be essential for smooth skin. Drink water throughout the day to quench your thirst and help your body function properly. You should also moisturize after you shower/bathe to help prevent dry, irritated skin.

Wear a Supportive Bra

For patients who’ve undergone breast augmentation surgery or other breast enhancement procedures, wearing a good bra can prevent sagging in the long run. That goes for bras as well as sports bras. Be sure to find a bra that’s supportive but that does not excessively compress your breasts.

We discussed how to pick a bra after getting breast implants on our blog last year. Feel free to read that previous post for more detailed advice.

Get Enough Sleep Every Night

Sleep makes a major difference when it comes to your appearance and your overall wellness. Be sure to get enough sleep every night so your body can repair itself and the fatigue doesn’t gradually affect your looks.
