As we age, our facial skin undergoes a dramatic amount of change. In adolescence, acne is a common sign of changes in hormone levels in the body as it is undergoing changes on the way to adulthood. The facial skin undergoes another change once we reach middle age, as it begins to show lines and wrinkles that had not been present in younger adulthood.

In both stages of life, there are biological processes at work, over which we have no control. As teens, acne is one of the byproducts of hormonal changes. By the same token, loss of collagen (a natural protein the body uses to fill out the skin over the skeletal structure) is also a result of another set of hormonal changes as we age.

That being said, there are any number of things we can do to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles due to the aging process. Let's look at the most common reasons for facial wrinkles other than as a natural part of the aging process.

Excess Sun Exposure

This is probably the most common cause for facial wrinkles other than due to the natural aging process. Sun and wind exposure can not only dry out delicate facial skin, but may lead to the development of skin cancer.

Dr. Paul Pin recommends that patients not only use a daily moisturizer and a sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor), but also wear proper eye protection when out in the sun. Patients should also wear light-colored, long sleeved clothing and a hat with a wide enough brim to properly protect the face.

Smoking and Alcohol Consumption

Both excessive tobacco and alcohol use can age the skin, leading to wrinkle formation. Tobacco smoke will dry out the skin, causing it to lose collagen at a faster rate. Excessive alcohol use can adversely affect the liver, which is vital for ridding the body of toxins. Build up of these toxins can lead to dull, sallow facial skin.

Obviously, the easiest solution to prevent facial wrinkles due to tobacco and alcohol use is to quit. However, some patients may see improvements in the tone of their skin if they moderate their consumption.

Lack of Exercise

Studies have shown that regular exercise helps circulate more blood to the facial skin, which can improve its appearance and keep it looking more youthful. By contrast, a sedentary lifestyle can leave facial skin looking dull and lifeless.

Even moderate exercise, such as walking or yoga, can keep facial skin looking more youthful. Obviously, any exercise program should be done with your doctor's approval.

Harsh Facial Care Products

Of course, it is also important to wash the face more often once you have started a regular exercise program. Avoid facial cleansing products that sting or burn, as they can be too harsh for aging skin and exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles. Follow a facial care regimen that is gentle and moisturizing in order to keep a healthy glow to the face.

It is a simple fact of life that the quality of the facial skin will change as we age. While a certain part of that is simply due to heredity, there's no reason to exacerbate the aging process. A few simple lifestyle changes as you age will help you put your best face forward.
