As you age, you come to find that there are many types of wrinkles that can affect the face. Some are localized to the forehead, and others are noticeable around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Not surprisingly, each type of wrinkle warrants a different type of cosmetic treatment. In this blog post, Dr. Paul Pin discusses each type of facial wrinkles, along with the possible treatment options to address them.

Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial folds refer to the vertical lines that run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. As you age, the lines deepen, leading many patients to seek effective treatment. The most effective treatment options are dermal fillers and facelift surgery. Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm can be injected into the nasolabial folds to fill in the depressions and smooth the skin. These treatments are ideal for patients in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, and are especially suited to patients undergoing nasolabial folds treatment for the first time. Facelift surgery can produce more permanent results than dermal fillers, which only last for a few months. With facelift, the skin of the mid and lower face is tightened, reducing the appearance of the nasolabial lines. The results of facelift surgery can last for 10 years or more.

Marionette Lines

Marionette lines are the vertical creases that run from the corners of your mouth down to the bottom of the chin. Marionette lines are treated in a similar manner as nasolabial folds. Both dermal fillers and facelift surgery can reduce their appearance.

Smoker's Lines

Smoker's lines are the vertical lines surrounding the lips. Their appearance can be more difficult to diminish, and may require a combination of treatments. Patients who also wish to undergo lip augmentation can have dermal fillers injected. The dermal fillers add fullness to the lips, which also smoothes out the skin surrounding the lips. Other non-surgical treatments, such as chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing, may minimize the appearance of smoker's lines.

Crow's Feet

Crow's feet are the horizontal lines that extend from the outer corners of the eyes. These lines are best treated with Botox Cosmetic. Botox injections relax the muscles that cause crow's feet, reducing the appearance of these fine lines.

Frown Lines

Frown lines are the vertical creases that appear between the eyebrows. These wrinkles can be treated with surgical and non-surgical care. Botox Cosmetic can be injected at the site of the wrinkles to disable the underlying muscles and smooth the skin. Brow lift surgery can be performed to tighten the underlying brow muscles and elevate the skin.

Forehead Creases

Forehead creases are the horizontal lines that run across the forehead. Like frown lines, forehead creases can be treated with Botox injections or brow lift surgery. Many patients choose to try injectables such as Botox Cosmetic before moving on to surgical treatment options.
