It is not uncommon for a person with a weak or undefined chin to feel self conscious about the chin's appearance. Fortunately, a chin augmentation cosmetic surgery procedure can possibly help those with weak or undefined chins overcome this misperception and achieve a more balanced, even appearance to the face. In other cases, people who have lost a considerable amount of weight may find that the shape of their chin has not changed. For these patients, chin augmentation is the final step to being able to show off their new body to the world.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Chin Augmentation?

Patients who are in good health and who do not smoke are excellent candidates for a chin augmentation procedure. Patients may have a receding chin, or one that is too round or too small for their face. Patients can discuss their ideal outcome and goals with Dr. Paul Pin at the time of the consultation.

What Is Involved in a Chin Augmentation Procedure?

Patients may undergo general or local anesthesia when undergoing the chin augmentation procedure. A small incision is made on the underside of the chin. Dr. Pin will then use this incision to create a pocket into which the implant will fit. Implants may be made of silicone, Teflon, Dacron, or other materials. They come in various sizes and lengths to elongate or widen the chin. Once the procedure is finished, the incision is sutured close. The entire procedure takes one to two hours. The scar will barely be noticeable once it heals.

Recovery from a Chin Augmentation Procedure

There will likely be some bruising and swelling around the chin. This should subside within the first week of surgery, when the compression bandage will be removed. It is best to stick to a liquid or soft diet for the first day or two following surgery. The chin may feel numb or stretched for the first two to three weeks following the procedure. Normal activities can generally be resumed within seven to 10 days following surgery.

Risks from a Chin Augmentation Procedure

As with any surgical procedure, there will be the risk of infection. The chin may not fully regain sensation following the surgery, or the implant may shift position. Less common complications include blood clots, fluid retention under the chin, uneven features to the face, or irregular contour to the chin.

The goal of any facial cosmetic surgery is to even out and balance the eyes, nose, and chin. There is no reason to live with a weak or small chin. With Dr. Pin's expertise, patients can be on their way to properly balanced facial features.
