The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) recently revealed the results of a liposuction survey that was distributed to more than 1,700 ASAPS member surgeons; almost 30 percent of those surveyed responded. According to the respondents, plastic surgeons typically perform between 51 and 100 liposuction procedures per year.

Patients may be surprised to hear that the majority of plastic surgeons prefer to perform traditional liposuction on patients rather than using the more "advanced" liposuction systems that have been developed. According to the results of the survey:

  • 92.7 percent of plastic surgeons perform suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL), or traditional liposuction, and 51.4 percent of surgeons prefer it over other liposuction techniques
  • 59 percent of plastic surgeons perform ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL), and 20.9 percent of surgeons prefer it over other liposuction techniques
  • 44.7 percent of plastic surgeons perform power-assisted liposuction (PAL), and 23 percent of surgeons prefer it over other liposuction techniques
  • 12.8 percent of plastic surgeons perform laser-assisted liposuction (LAL), and 3.9 percent of surgeons prefer it over other liposuction techniques
  • 12.8 percent of plastic surgeons perform non-invasive fat removal treatments, and 0.8 percent of surgeons prefer them over other liposuction techniques
