Planning for plastic surgeryAt the practice of Paul Pin, MD, we are committed to help patients prepare for plastic surgery. In our recent series of blog posts, we have reviewed the medications that patients should avoid before plastic surgery, and provided a sample shopping list so patients can purchase everything they need for their recovery period. In this blog post, we offer tips and instructions on what to expect the day of your surgery.

Pack a Bag or Purse

Most patients do not need to stay overnight in a recovery facility after plastic surgery, so they don't need to bring much with them on the day of surgery. You should bring a purse or small bag that contains your photo identification and medical card. If you have not yet paid for your procedure or arranged for payment, bring the cash, check, or appropriate credit card with you so you can pay for treatment before your surgery.

If you are staying overnight in a facility, bring the following:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Face wash and lotion
  • Two comfortable outfits, such as sweatpants and loose fitting shirts (don't forget undergarments and socks)
  • Medications
  • A book, magazine, or some other type of entertainment

What to Wear

On the day of your surgery, you should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. If possible, wear a button-up shirt so you don't have to pull your shirt over your head and risk snagging bandages or stitches.

What Not to Wear

More important is what not to wear on the day of your surgery. Patients should avoid wearing the following:

  • Contact lenses; wear glasses if you need to see clearly on the day of surgery
  • Jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, rings, and piercings
  • Make-up
  • Nail polish

Avoid Food and Drinks

You should not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of your surgery. Continue to abstain from food and drinks the morning of your surgery to avoid any complications with anesthesia.

Before You Leave Your House

Make sure that your recovery area is set up for your arrival home. You may want to set out any drinks, snacks, or entertainment items at your bedside so they are readily accessible upon your return. When you leave your house, lock up and make sure you have your key with you.

Try to Ease Your Anxiety

Many patients experience some degree of fear or anxiety the night before and the morning of their plastic surgery procedures. Try to ease your anxiety by focusing on something else (such as a book or movie), meditating, practicing breathing exercises, or talking to a loved one about your concerns. Make sure you have done everything that you can to prepare for your recovery period, including any chores, errands, or other tasks that need to be taken care of. Being prepared is one of the best ways to reduce anxious feelings before plastic surgery.
