Now that summer has arrived, clothing that shows off the body is not far behind. Whether it is bathing suits, shorts, or higher hemlines for skirts and dresses, this is the season in which the body is out on display. Most people want to have a physique that they are proud to show off as the temperatures begin to soar. Although the abdominal region is the area upon which most people focus, the shape and size of the buttocks are also important for many patients.

Unfortunately, the buttocks can be one of the most difficult areas to tone and firm because, similar to the abdomen, they tend to be one of the first places where the body stores fat, and one of the last places to show any improvement. Dr. Paul Pin can perform buttock liposuction to remove stubborn pockets of fat that have not responded to regular exercise and a sensible, low fat diet. It can allow you to put the finishing touches on all the hard work you have done to get your body into shape for summer.

Buttock Liposuction Procedure

In a liposuction procedure, Dr. Pin will make a series of small incisions in the buttocks so fat can be removed. He will then insert a thin, hollow metal rod (called a cannula) into the incisions and gently vacuum out the excess fat. In some cases, Dr. Pin may perform tumescent liposuction, in which he will first use a series of injections containing a topical anesthetic and epinephrine to make the fat cells swell up and move closer to the surface of the skin, making them easier to remove. He may also use lasers, ultrasound, or a vibrating cannula to break down the fat for more efficient and effective results.

A buttock liposuction procedure can be done alone or in conjunction with a buttock lift to address sagging buttocks. Liposuction may also be performed on other areas of the body; abdominal liposuction is the most popular, but it can also be performed on the thighs, hips, and knees.

Recovery and Side Effects

In most cases, recovery should take anywhere from six to eight weeks before the final results can be seen. You should be able to resume normal daily activities such as driving or going to work or school by the end of the second week after surgery. You can resume a light exercise routine by four to six weeks following surgery, and should be back to your usual exercise by the end of six to eight weeks.

You may experience bruising and swelling during the first two weeks following surgery. This is the body's natural defense response to having the skin cut open. Ice and cold compresses can be used to reduce the amount and duration of swelling and bruising once the incisions have fully closed over. Taking the herb Arnica montana will also help with bruising and swelling.

Now is the time when you should be proud to show off the results of your efforts to get in shape for summer. Contact our practice to find out if you are a good candidate for a buttock liposuction procedure.
