Although breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures, other women may wish to actually reduce the size of their breasts. Overly large breasts that sag or droop can make it difficult for women to find clothing, bras, and bathing suits that fit properly. These women may also be the center of unwanted attention in the form of rude stares or comments. Overly large breasts may even cause medical issues such as head, neck, shoulder, and back pain, as well as difficulty breathing due to the excess weight of the breasts.

Many women with overly large breasts choose to undergo breast reduction surgery. After treatment, they are eager to see the final results from the procedure. Dr. Paul Pin cautions these women to be patient with the recovery process, as the body needs a certain amount of time to heal. This will provide the best possible results. The Best Results Start before Surgery

Dr. Pin believes that the best possible results from a breast reduction procedure actually start before the surgery.

Tobacco: Tobacco use can dry out the skin. This may lead to poor wound healing, longer healing times, and excessive scarring. Undergoing breast reduction surgery is the perfect reason to quit smoking for good starting at least two to three weeks prior to surgery.

Alcohol: Dr. Pin also recommends avoiding any alcohol consumption starting two to three weeks prior to surgery. Alcohol can increase the risk for excessive bleeding both during and after surgery, leading to poor wound healing and excessive scarring.

General health: Patients should be in good general health and at a stable weight to get the best results from a breast reduction procedure. Certain chronic conditions, such as diabetes, can increase the risk for surgical complications and poor results. Furthermore, because breast tissue loses elasticity over time, weight fluctuations can change the shape and size of the breasts, which can also adversely affect results.

Maintaining Results after Surgery

It is not enough to properly prepare before surgery to get the best results from a breast reduction procedure. Patients must also take certain steps to maintain their results.

Exercise: In most cases, patients can resume a normal exercise routine starting at about six weeks after surgery. A proper exercise routine is important because, as mentioned earlier, breast tissue can expand or contract as weight fluctuates. If a proper weight is not maintained after surgery, the breasts will simply gain weight and begin to sag and droop again.

Diet: Hand in hand with exercise, patients should also stick to a sensible balanced diet, including plenty of fruits and vegetables. Patients should also drink the daily-recommended amount of water.

A breast reduction procedure should not be viewed as a quick way to improve the size and shape of the breasts. Rather, it is an ongoing process, both before and after surgery, in order to obtain the best possible results. To schedule your breast reduction consultation, contact our practice today.
