The shape of the human body changes over time. It goes through a tremendous number of changes from infancy, all the way through adolescence, and on into adulthood. However, lifestyle changes, illness, as well as the simple effects of aging, can also change the shape of the adult body. In some cases, the residual effect of these changes will be excess flabby skin and wrinkles.

Nowadays, people do not need to accept excess skin as the inevitable result of aging or lifestyle changes. Depending upon the location on the body, Dr. Paul Pin has a variety of cosmetic procedures he offers to either remove or lessen the appearance of excess skin.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Excess Skin on the Body?

The two most common causes of excess skin are loss of collagen in the skin around the face and neck due to aging, and sudden, dramatic weight loss. Collagen is a protein naturally found in the body. It fills out the skin over the skull. As the body ages, it loses collagen. This collagen loss can result in a tired, hollowed appearance to the face, with wrinkles that form around the outside corners of the eyes (crow's feet) and around the nose and mouth. It may also result in jowls or a double chin along the jaw line.

Dramatic weight loss, whether due to a change in lifestyle, illness, or pregnancy can also leave behind excess skin around the stomach, hips, thighs, and arms. The skin loses elasticity as it is stretched. Once the weight has been lost, the skin may not conform fully to the new body contour. This leaves behind what are known as stretch marks.

Treatments for Excess Skin

Face and neck: The easiest treatment for wrinkles around the face is dermal filler injections. Dr. Pin will inject the filler just under the skin at targeted areas around the face. Depending upon the type of dermal filler, this can be done around the eyes, nose and lips, neckline, and sometimes into the lips themselves. The dermal filler will add volume to the facial skin, and effects will last from 12 to 18 months.

The other treatment for excess skin around the face and neck are a facelift, brow lift or neck lift procedure. A series of incisions are made around the face and neck, depending upon the type of procedure. The skin and underlying fat and tissue layers are then pulled tight, sutured back into place, and the excess removed.

Body contouring: Body contouring removes excess skin from other parts of the body than the face and neck. The procedure is very similar to that used for a facelift. Incisions are made around the excess skin that is to be removed. The skin is then lifted away and tightened. Finally, it is sutured back into place, and the excess is removed.

Dr. Pin can help patients look their best, whether it is by making their face look more youthful or by putting the finishing touches on the body contour after weight loss. Contact Dr. Paul Pin today to schedule a plastic surgery consultation.
