Dr. Paul G. Pin gets this question a lot. Many people from the Dallas, TX area wonder if he can perform some sort of surgery that can remove unwanted pounds and keep that unwanted weight off. While Dr. Pin does offer body sculpting and cosmetic fat removal surgery, losing weight is not so simple.

Let’s take a moment to consider what plastic surgery can and cannot do when it comes to patients losing weight. This should give you a better understanding of the role plastic surgery plays when it comes to people’s appearance.

Plastic Surgery Is Not for Weight Loss Purposes

We should state first and foremost that plastic surgery isn’t meant as a weight loss procedure.

While a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or arm lift (brachioplasty) will remove flab and loose skin, these surgeries aren’t for weight loss per se. It’s true that in removing loose skin a patient will lose some weight, but the surgeries are more about tightening drooping parts of the body and improving your overall figure.

What about Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic fat removal surgery that targets specific pockets of fat. While fat is taken out of the patient’s body, only a limited amount of fat can be safely removed during surgery. Again, body contouring surgery is intended to enhance the figure and tighten up the skin, not to help patients lose weight.

Diet, Exercise, and Lifestyle Changes

The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to make lasting changes to your lifestyle. That means eating a healthy, balanced diet that is comprised predominantly of nutrient-rich foods like vegetables and fruits. In addition, it’s important to stay active in order to build lean muscle and burn unwanted body fat.

Do your best to avoid crash diets, fad diets, and cleanses. Instead, try to find a sustainable nutrition plan that you can stick with for years to come. You may not lose weight as rapidly as the fad diets, but you are more likely to keep that weight off since you have a realistic relationship with the foods you love.

Working with Your General Practitioner

If you don’t know where to start with a weight loss plan, be sure to speak with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to offer sound advice on how you can improve your eating habits and what exercises you should consider.

If you suffer from morbid obesity, your doctor could recommend bariatric surgery, which is a surgical weight loss procedure designed to reduce calorie intake.

Body Contouring after Weight Loss

After losing a lot of weight, you may experience loose skin and stretch marks. This is a normal response the skin has when you lose a lot of weight.

While the skin shrinks back a little bit, it won’t always conform to your slimmer frame. That’s where body contouring surgeries can help. The loose skin can be removed and your overall appearance can be enhanced.
