According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the leading professional organization for plastic surgeons, more than 41,000 breast reduction procedures were performed in 2014 by its members. A breast reduction is one of the few cosmetic surgical procedures that can be done for medically necessary reasons, rather than purely aesthetic ones (such as a breast augmentation procedure). Women with overly large breasts may be suffering from back and neck problems, due to the weight of their breasts, as well as possibly having difficulty breathing when they lay down in bed at night.

It is not hard to draw the conclusion that women who undergo a breast reduction procedure have more invested in a positive outcome than just the aesthetic appeal of their breasts. These women are also concerned about the ways in which a breast reduction procedure can improve their health. Dr. Paul Pin believes that a successful outcome from a breast reduction procedure actually starts before the surgery, which is why he provides patients with a thorough set of pre-op instructions.

Tobacco and Alcohol Use

Tobacco smoke will dry out the skin. Alcohol will increase the risk for bleeding both during and after the surgery. Both of these may lead to longer wound healing times and excessive scarring. Dr. Pin recommends that patients quit both smoking and regular alcohol use starting three weeks prior to surgery. He also encourages patients to take that time to quit both smoking and regular alcohol use for good. This will help improve the look and feel of the breasts, neck, and facial skin.

Cutting Down the Risk of Infection

Begin using a good antibacterial soap starting the week prior to surgery. Take a hot shower and wash your hair the night before the surgery. Dr. Pin will give you a prescription for antibiotics, which should be filled prior to surgery, as you will not be in any condition to get them filled immediately after surgery.

What and What Not to Wear

Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing, including a button-down shirt and slip-on flat shoes. Do not wear perfume, deodorant, makeup, hair product, contact lenses, or jewelry on the day of surgery. Bring your glasses and their case.

Arranging a Ride

On your day of surgery, Dr. Pin will not allow you to arrive or leave by yourself. This includes coming by taxi or bus. You must arrange for a family member or friend to drive you to and from the surgery center. Somebody must also stay with you for the first 24 hours following surgery, in case there are any adverse reactions to the anesthesia.

Eating and Drinking

You will not be allowed to eat or drink anything after midnight the day before the surgery. This includes any gum, coffee, tea, or breath mints. Small sips of water are allowed for any medication that must be taken the day of surgery.

Deciding to undergo breast reduction surgery can be a life-changing undertaking. Following all pre-op instructions will help make the outcome of that decision a positive one.
