The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has reported that breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure for the second year in a row. It is the third most popular procedure performed among 18-19-year-olds, the number one procedure performed on 20-39-year-olds, and the third most popular procedure performed on 40-55+-year-olds.

More than 347,000 women underwent surgical breast augmentation in 2007, while about 307,000 women underwent the procedure in 2008.

The number of plastic surgery procedures performed in 2008 was down across most plastic surgery and skin care procedures. Surgeons and economic forecasters attribute this trend to the recession. Almost 170,000 more plastic surgery procedures were performed and almost 325,000 more non-invasive procedures were performed in 2007 compared to 2008.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is a professional organization made up of board-certified plastic surgeons. Every year, ASPS polls its members and posts the latest cosmetic surgery statistics on its website.
