If you look in any fashion or celebrity gossip magazine, it’s obvious that voluptuous, full lips are in style. In fact, having “bee-stung” lips has been in vogue as far back as the 1920s, when silent film star Clara Bow first made the look popular as part of her signature flapper look. Unfortunately, not everybody had the good fortune to be born with naturally full lips, which is why cosmetic means to enhance the lips have been consistently popular for many years.

Over the years, cosmetic methods to plump the lips have included lipsticks and glosses that are infused with peppermint oil and cinnamon oil, which naturally irritate the lips and cause them to swell. From there, we moved on to lip injections, which work similarly to dermal fillers for the face by injecting plumping products into the lips. Finally, there are permanent lip implants, such as Perma Lip, that are made of a soft molded silicone.

Many of Dr. Paul Pin’s patients have asked him about permanent lip augmentation, particularly in terms of results. Below, he discusses the surgical procedure for lip augmentation, as well as the results that you can reasonably expect from Perma Lip implants.

Surgical Procedure for Perma Lip Implants

Compared to some other plastic surgery procedures, the lip augmentation procedure is easy to perform, and Dr. Pin can perform it in his office in approximately an hour. Additionally, patients will probably only require a local anesthetic for the procedure.

Dr. Pin will start the procedure by making small incisions inside of the mouth, where it touches the upper and bottom lip. He will then create a small tunnel for the upper lip, as well as one for the bottom lip. Finally, Dr. Pin will use a special instrument to thread through the tunnel and place the lip implant. The excess material is trimmed, and then the incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches.

Results from a Lip Implant Procedure

Recovery from a lip implant procedure is quick, as most patients can resume normal activities in less than a week. Once the initial swelling has gone down after the first few days, you should soon start to see the results from your surgery. Both your upper and lower lip will look fuller, but still retain the proper proportions, with the lower lip being larger than the top lip.

In addition, your upper lip will be much more defined in terms of your cupid’s bow. This is the part of your top lip that forms two different peaks under your nose. If you look at the shape of your top lip from a vertical angle, it is easy to see that it is indeed the shape of an archery bow, from which this portion of your lips gets its name.

From Clara Bow, to Marilyn Monroe, to Angelina Jolie, full, sensuous lips have always been in style. Permanent lip implants may be an option for you if you want a permanent way to improve the fullness and shape of your lips.
